BOK TOWER 80TH ANNIVERSARY - FREE ADMISSION JAN 31 2009

January 31 only. 8AM to 6 PM

Free admission will be offered at our 80th anniversary on January 31. “Sharing the Gift” will be the theme of the celebration from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free cake and juice will be served, a Japanese drum band will perform and there will be tree plantings, greenhouse tours, historical exhibits and more.

One of the Gardens’ most popular special events, “Crossing the Moat,” will give visitors a rare opportunity to walk across the moat that surrounds the Singing Tower for a closer look at the Great Brass Door. Designed by renowned master metal worker Samuel Yellin, the Tower’s imposing door weighs approximately 1,100 pounds, is 4” thick, 5’ wide by 10’ tall and features 30 brass panels depicting the Biblical story of creation.

In addition to carillon concerts at 1 and 3 p.m., special dignitaries will speak on world peace in a ceremony that begins at 11 a.m. “Gardens’ founder Edward Bok fought to bring an end to world wars by donating $100,000 when he created the American Peace Prize in 1923,” explains David Price, president of Bok Tower Gardens. “We’re honored to have members of the Bok family including former Harvard president Derek Bok and his wife Dr. Sissela Bok as honored guests along with many other dignitaries.

After a hugely successful 2007 tour, the fans have spoken and they want more. Rush has extended its Snakes and Arrows World Tour into 2008 and will hit over 45 cities in the US and Canada and the first return to Orlando in more than 10 years.

Fans will experience the technical virtuosity and hard-rocking compositions they have come to expect from Rush members, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart. In addition, the band will update their set list for the 2008 tour.Since releasing its self-titled debut album in 1974, Rush has been universally regarded as one of the most inventive and exciting groups in rock, famed for virtuoso musicianship, epic soundscapes and dramatic lyricism.The band's extraordinary body of work – which includes such acclaimed works as 1976's 2112, 1981's MOVING PICTURES, 1996's TEST FOR ECHO and 2002's VAPOR TRAILS – has achieved worldwide sales exceeding 35 million units. A SNAKES AND ARROWS LIVE CD is planned to be released sometime in April. In addition, the track "Malignant Narcissism" from the band's 2007 release, SNAKES & ARROWS has been nominated for a Grammy Award in the category "Best Rock Instrumental Performance."

Orange County National to host collegiate tournaments in April & May 2007

Orange County National will host two prominent collegiate tournaments in April and May. The UAA Championship will be contested over 36 holes, April 22 - 23 with defending champion, University of Rochester, looking to repeat against tough competition from Emory, New York University,Carnegie Mellon and Brandeis.

The A-10 Golf Championship will return again to Orange County National May 5 - 6. Eleven teams from the conference will be teeing it up on Panther Lake. Charlotte, ranked as one of the nation's top collegiate teams this year, is the defending champion.

Both championships are open to the public and admission is free.
